NEISSERIAE SPECIES

(Neisseriae species) Mode of transmission, mechanisms by which microorganisms cause disease and diagnosis

 Define Neisseriae
This is a Gram negative  intrcellular diplococci occurring in pair
List the species of Neisseriae species
  • Nesseriae gonorrhoeae
  • Neisseriae menegitidis
  • Neisseriae mucosa
  • Neisseriae subflava
  • Meisseriae flavescen

Mention the species of medical importance
  • Nesseriae gonorrhoeae
  • Neisseriae menegitidis
:Describe the normal habitat Nesseriae gonorrhoeae
  Genital area

 Describe the morphology Nesseriae gonorrhoeae
  • Are Gram negative Diplococci(pairs)
  • Are oval, bean or kidney shaped.
  • Are in pairs or in masses.
  • Are non sporing.
  • Have a small capsule.

Step 7: Describe the mode of transmission and pathogenicity of  Nesseriae gonorrhoeae
Nesseriae gonorrhoeae  is transmitted :-
  • Sexual contact
  • Congetnitally in neonatal during birth

PATHOGENICITY-
Nesseriae gonorrhoeae  causes:-
  • Acute conjunctivitis in infants born of mothers with gonorrhoeae. The eyes are infected during delivery.
  • Vulvovaginitis in pre-pubertal girls
  • Gonococcus arthritis i.e. joint pain, fever and rash.
  • In male it causes;-inflammation of the ducts and dysuria
  • In female it causes ;-inflammation of the fallopian tubes(salpingitis),PID,cervical and urethral infection
 Enzymes produced by Nesseriae gonorrhoeae
Enzymes
The above pathogenicity is due to production/secretion of enzymes
These enzymes enable the bacteria to attack an individual and cause a disease or an infection. They include:-
  Beta lactamase
Describe the laboratory diagnosis Nesseriae gonorrhoeae
1.SPECIMENS
  HVS
  Blood
  Urethral swab
  Cervical swab
  Eye swabs
  CSF
NB:specimens are transported in Stuarts transport media

2.CULTURE CHARACTERISTICS
  • Its an aerobe or facultative aerobe.
  • It’s a fastidious organism and delay should be avoided when culturing.
  • Isolation is done on :-
(i)Modified New York City media(MNYC)
(i)Thayer Martin media(TM)

MNYC   or  THAYER MARTIN MEDIA
  • -Colonies grow rapidly. They are small grey raised colonies after an over night incubation at 35-37 0c

.
3.BIOCHEMICAL TESTS
Neisseriae gonorrhea is:-
  • Oxidase positive
  • Catalase positive
  • Ferments glucose only.Doesnt ferment lactose Maltose and sucrose
4.PREVENTION
  • Avoid sexual contact with infected persons
  • Safe sex practice
  • Seek medical treatment
  • Hygiene
